In Cypriot hospital, green is good for the heart

Nestled in the Eastern Mediterranean, the island of Cyprus boasts nearly 350 days of sunshine annually. When a new hospital was to be built, Marinos Soteriou, MD, and Christos Christou, MD, had the bright idea to create a green hospital using all that sunlight. Partnering with Siemens for the concept, planning, design, and equipment procurement, they built a state-of-the-art medical facility specializing in adult cardiovascular and cardiothoracic surgery, kidney transplants, neurosurgery, general surgery, and orthopedics.

Cost savings from sun and earth

The American Heart Institute (AHI) produces nearly 80 percent of the energy it consumes, making use of both photovoltaic (solar) panels and geothermal energy. A flagship for Siemens Green+ Hospitals program, the AHI is not only eco-friendly, but also energy-efficient. According to Soteriou, energy bills are a top expense for hospitals. In addition to harnessing renewable energy to run the hospital and keep it comfortable, Siemens also installed a building management system that is the backbone of the hospital’s streamlined use of that energy efficiency. The system “optimizes the energy use of the building by controlling the function of the building in general – heating, cooling, fresh air supply, shading, and of course lighting as well,” Soteriou says.

Innovations and a patient-centric focus

With the latest in Siemens technology, AHI is stepping into what many consider to be the future of hospital surgery. AHI features a hybrid operating room, which allows radiologists and cardiologists to care for patients in the same room as the surgeons that will also treat them. This is best for the patient, who does not have to be moved from room to room, cutting down on the possibility of infections, Christou says. Indeed, patient care and comfort are top priorities. With this in mind, AHI was designed to look more like a hotel than a hospital. AHI’s motto is: “We care for the ailing patient, but at the same time we care for the ailing planet.”
