Radiology Associates works with the combined power of Biograph mCT.

The the installation over one year ago of the Biograph® mCT at the Southside Imaging Center in Corpus Christi, Texas, USA, one of five Radiology Associates, LLP facilities in South Texas, added sense of hope for patients sometimes facing terminal illnesses. The Biograph mCT pack the extra arsenal in combined positron emission tomography (PET) and computed tomography (CT). Michael Kroeger, MIS, NMAA, PET, NCT, Director of PET and Nuclear Medicine Services, is proud to exhibit the scanning room where the Biograph mCT sits underneath a ceiling of stars, intended to divert attention and ease the patient.

The Imaging Center sees more than 200 patients each day.

For the patients and for the future

For Kroeger and his team, what makes the Biograph mCT unique is its shared service approach , utilizing the Biograph mCT as both a PET•CT scanner and a CT scanner. The system combines PET and CT to improve diagnostic confidence by offering reproducible quantification, superior image resolution, and speed while minimizing radiation dose. The ability to image what was not previously possible opens up new doors for treatment or monitoring and can redefine clinical decision-making. The vision to obtain an advanced PET and CT system spurred from the fact that the old PET system was coming to the end of its life and the facility was looking to expand. Ellis Keitt, the facility’s Practice Administrator, wanted to save time and streamline processes in order to accommodate to the steady flow of patients – the facility in Corpus Christi sees more than 200 patients a day. Before, and using separate systems, patients were looking at 45- to 60-minute PET scans and separate CT scans in cramped bores. Third-party software was used to analyze the images and when images needed to be fused together, it sometimes became a guessing game.

Robert Flores’ scan was comfortable, quick, and easy.

Early bird catches the worm

The new Biograph mCT can perform full body scans in as less than 15 minutes and a 78-centimeter bore, one of the largest available, can now accommodate even more patients, comfortably. The quality of the images is higher and the radiologists are equipped with more information from each scan. The Biograph mCT is equipped with Time of Flight that intensifies the origin of the tumor by making the image tighter and crisper. The number of physician interpreters was reduced from seven to four to enhance the art of reading mCT PET•CT scans. “I think it makes our studies and reads more consistent and I believe that our referring physicians appreciate that,” explains Keitt.
